What are some simple ways to "go green" and help the environment?

i really want to become more environmentally friendly. i know i shouldn't use as many plastic water bottles, but someone i work with told me that reusing them increases ur chances of cancer. are there water bottles that don't have the carbon stuff in them? what are some other ways that i can decrease my carbon footprint?
