Why do contrails persist longer than 20 minutes in the sky?

Over the past month, I viewed over 30 contrails that lasted in the sky over 20 minutes in my area. I thought contrails were supposed to disperse within a matter of minutes. What atmospheric conditions would make a contrail last 20 minutes or more?
